Blue cloth-covered boards with green lettering on spine. Covers have slight fading and a few faint scuffs, else pristine and intact, binding tight, sharp tips. Pages have light age toning, else pristine and intact. A few black-and-white illustrations included. This is a reprint of a journal originally kept by Louis McLane, Jr. from 1844-1848. Louis McLane, Jr. (1819-1905) was an American financier and a president of Wells Fargo. McLane, Jr. also served in the United States Navy. His parents were Catherine McLane and Louis McLane, Sr., the latter of whom served as a U.S. Representative and U.S. Senator and the Secretary of the Treasury and Secretary of State during President Andrew Jackson's administration. McLane, Jr.'s journal entries present a captivating life at sea as well as contemporary events in California. His sea voyages encompass a variety of ships that traveled to different parts of the world including Rio de Janeiro, Valparaiso, Paita, the Marquesas, the Society Islands, the Hawai'ian Islands, San Francisco, Monterey, Mazatlan, Acapulco, Panama, Nicaragua, Callao, and La Paz. He also writes about the Pacific Squadron and his interactions with John C. Fremont, Robert F. Stockton, and Stephen Kearny in Santa Barbara and Los Angeles. In his Editor's Introduction, Jay Monaghan gives a concise biography about McLane, Jr. Published by Dawson's Book Shop for the Santa Barbara Historical Society.
