Description

Hellman, Lillian. New York. New York Theater Program Corp.,12935.
English, First Edition, Very Good, Softcover, quarto, 9 1/2" X 7 1/8", 32 pp.

Very Good quarto, white paper wraps, stable bound, black-and-white image of Miss Paton of Covent Garden as she appeared in 1822 to front cover, advertisement for Chesterfield Cigarettes to back, black lettering to covers. Minor soiling to cover, rubbing to spine, otherwise unmarked throughout. Text in English, playbill for “The Children’s Hour” at Maxine Elliott’s Theater, March 18, 1935. Replete with black-and-white illustrations and photographs of advertisements including Chevrolet and Camel Cigarettes. Sparking controversy during the 1930s, The Children’s Hour tells the story of the power of gossip and the consequences of widespread homophobia. This incredible playbill not only represents a glimpse into the theater but makes for a great source of advertisements and pop culture of the 1930s.
