Description

Gleason, Madeline. San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1944.

English, Good HC 8vo, SIGNED by the author on endpaper, limited run of 250. 59pp.

Red paper with significant soiling (but no warping or damage) over tan cloth backstrap. Tan label with red lettering affixed to spine, slight cocking. Bumped tips, 3/4" split at hinge. Spot on signature page, interior clean, tightly bound. Ephemera from the California Book Auction, 1976 laid in loosely. Madeline Gleason (1903 – 1979) was a poet, dramatist, and the founder of the San Francisco Poetry Guild. In 1947, she directed the first poetry festival in the United States, laying the groundwork (along with other figures such as Kenneth Rexroth, Robert Duncan, William Everson, Jack Spicer, James Broughton, et al.) for what became known as the San Francisco Renaissance. This is her first book. Grabhorn Press is a luminary figure in the history of the California small press.
