Description

Grosbois, Charles. Geneva. Nagel Publishers. 1966.
English, First edition, Very Good, HC, 4to, 157 pp

Very Good quarto, white cloth over board, stamped gilt lettering to cover and spine, minor bumping to tips, text block uniformly age toned at edges, otherwise binding is tight and no markings throughout. Bound-in rice paper overlay at title page. Good white pictorial dust jacket featuring full-color illustration to cover, chipping and closed tears to edges, protected in a paper-backed Mylar sleeve. 157 pp. Replete with full-color tipped-in plates and includes a list of illustrations. From the Introduction: "This is a book of what the Japanese call Shunga, "Images of Spring": erotic, sensual pictures that form a part of the treasury of Japanese art. Our intention is not to provide an interpretation of the pictures that in any way casts a reflection on a country deserving of nothing but respect; the pleasures of the flesh belong to the entire world and all forms of art have exalted them everywhere, sometimes surreptitiously, sometimes openly and frankly."
